From what I remember, the most he'd do if he had to have dealings with an act that wasn't his cup of tea was either telegraph that he was going through the motions in this particular instance or else look slightly uncomfortable or hangdog (he used to convey discomfiture in the same sort of way when introducing artists on Top Of The Tops who happened not to be his thing - disapproval mixed with embarrassment at seeming a bit like a mercenary for accepting such a gig). His prime years of working as a link-man there coincided with the time I watched the live coverage most dedicatedly, and I have to say I can't remember him being withering about artists who'd failed to impress him.
